Ondelagada tambli / urgele sihi tambli / urga gadde sweet tambli is a tasty havyaka recipe which is very healthy too. It is a 'first served tambli'. Very good for memory power too.

A common tradition which is nowadays followed rarely is starting the meal with tambli (modlu umbu tambli / first served tambli). In earlier days, it was more common to prepare two types of tambli - first served tambli and the regular tambli. Generally in case of first served tambli, seasoning is not done. Even if seasoning is done, then it is generally done using ghee and added before grinding the grated coconut during tambli preparation. In other type of tambli (general type of tambli-which is consumed after huli), seasoning is done at the end- i.e. after grinding and mixing with curd/majjige.

First served tambli can also be used for drinking during meals.

In this post, let us see how to prepare ondelagada tambli / urgele sihi tambli / urga gadde sweet tambli.

Ingredients: 1 cup = 250 ml
  • Ondelaga / urgele with its root - 2 cups
  • Grated coconut - 1 cup
  • Pepper - 1 table spoon
  • Cumin seeds - 3/4 table spoon
  • Ghee - 1 teaspoon
  • Butter milk / mashed curd - 1 cup
  • Jaggery - 3 table spoons 
  • Salt - according to taste
  • Water - 6 to 7 cups
Timing: 15 minutes
Servings: 6 to 7

Step 1. In a seasoning pan, splutter pepper and cumin seeds in ghee. Keep aside.


Step 2. Wash ondelaga / urgele along with its root well. Roughly chop into pieces.



Step 3. Blend chopped ondelaga adding enough water to coarse paste.


Step 4. Add grated coconut and spluttered ingredients (pepper and cumin seeds) to blended ondelaga paste and blend again to fine paste.

Step 5. Pour the paste in a strainer and remove solid portion/jigatu. Use strained content for preparing tambli.


Step 6. Add 5 to 6 cups of water, butter milk (or mashed curd), jaggery and salt (according to taste) and mix well.

Step 7. Enjoy with rice or you may drink it directly!

    1) some people use only leaves
    2) some use only roots
