Vadeyakki mudde/ masala idli / masala vada
Ingredients: 1 cup = 250 ml

  • Urad dal - 1/2 cup
  • Idli rava/akki kadi - 1 cup
  • Grated coconut - 3/4 cup
  • Coriander seeds - 1.5 tbl spoons
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tbl spoon
  • Hing - 1/2 tspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tspoon
  • Salt - according to taste
Method:
Step 1. Roast urad dal (1/2 cup) till it turns to light brown in colour on low flame. Keep aside for cooling.
 

Step 2.  To grated coconut, add coriander seeds (1.5 tbl spoons), cumin seeds (1 tbl spoon), hing (1/2 t spoon) and turmeric powder (1/2 tspoon) and grind it with roasted and cooled urad dal. Add enough water for grinding. Grind it into a fine paste.



Step 3. In a kadai, roast idli rava/ akki kadi(1 cup) for 2 to 3 minutes. Then add 1 cup of water, mix.

 


Step 4. Add ground paste to idli rava. Also add turmeric powder(1 tspoon) and salt(according to taste). Mix well.

Step 5. Switch on the stove. On LOW FLAME, stir continuously till batter becomes thicker (you can add some more water till idli like consistency. But if you used more water it takes more time for thickening. Once sticking to the bottom of kadai stops, then turn off the stove.



Step 6. Allow to cool for 5 minutes.

Step 7. Dip palm in water and kneed well the dough.



Step 8. Make a orange sized ball and flatten it. Then make a small hole at the center.




Step 9. Place all vadas one by one and one above the other in a steamer (cook it in steamer or in idli cooker). But have to close with banana leaf or one plate on top of vadas carefully, before closing lid. If you are using idli cooker then close with idli plate only (as shown in below picture). Cooking time in steamer is 25 to 30 minutes (in idli cooker it takes 20 minutes)

Step 10. Serve with red coconut chutney. Enjoy!
