Tomato sambar / saaru

Ingredients: 1 cup = 100 ml
  • Tomato - 3 to 4
  • Tur dal - 1 cup
  • Sugar/jaggery - 1 tspoon
  • Salt - as required


For sambar masala:
  • Grated coconut - 1 tbl spoon
  • Tamarind - Small lemon sized ball
  • Coriander seeds - 1 tspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tspoon
  • Methi seeds - 1 tspoon
  • Hing - 1/2 tspoon(powder)
  • Red chilly - 2 or as required
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tspoon
  • Curry leaves - 1 strand
  • Oil - 1 tspoon
  • Turmeric powder - a pinch


Method: 
Step 1. Wash and chop 3 tomatoes and cook along with tur dal with a pinch of termeric powder and a pinch of hing. After cooking, allow it to cool. Grind cooled dal.




Step 2. For sambar masala, in a seasoning pan, heat oil on low flame, then roast methi seeds, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, hing, red chillies, curry leaves and mustard seeds. When mustard starts to splutter, turn off the stove. And add a pinch of turmeric powder. 


Step 3. Grind these roasted masala ingredients, grated coconut and tamarind along with water.


Step 4. In a vessel, boil chopped tomato (1) in 1 cup of water. When it boils, add ground paste of dal and sambar masala paste. 


Step 5.  Add about 2 cups of water and mix well. Add curry leaves, salt and sugar, mix well. Allow it to boil for 10 to 15 minutes.

 

Step 6. When it boils well, add coriander leaves. Turn off the stove. That's it, enjoy!
