Kadle maddi / Hayagriva

Kadle maddi / Hayagriva is a traditional havyaka recipe. It is prepared during special occasions.

Ingredients: 1 cup = 250 ml

  • Kadle bele/ chana dal - 1 cup
  • Grated coconut - 1 cup
  • Jaggery(powder) - 1.5 cups or sugar - 1.25 cups(appr)
  • Cashew nuts - 10 to 15(optional)
  • Ginger - 1/2 tspoon(optional)
  • Cardamom - 3 to 4
  • (If you use sugar then add a pinch of salt along with it)

Step 1. Wash and cook chana dal in 3 cups of water ~ 6 whistles. It should not be over-cooked.



Step 2. Remove extra water from cooked chana dal.

Step 3. Turn on the stove. In a thick bottomed kadai, pour grated coconut along with jaggery and mix well. Allow jaggery to melt.

Step 4. When it melts, add cooked chana dal and mix well. Saute till it becomes little watery texture.


Step 5. When it becomes watery, saute occasionally till it becomes thicker. Add ginger mix well.

Step 6. Add cardamom powder and cashew nuts when it becomes thicker. Saute well for 2 minutes.


Step 7. Enjoy kadlemaddi with ghee.
