Avalakki / Poha / Agalkaas Avalakki

Avalakki / Poha is a simple recipe for breakfast/snack. It is a good option when there is not much of time. In Havyaka community, during special occasions avalakki is prepared without adding onion for breakfast (it is called agalkaas avalakki). Instead of dinner, avalakki is prepared during occasions like ekadashi fasting, shashti etc. Along with avalakki, we can mix chudwa. Some people consume avalakki along with curd.

Apart from preparation during religious functions, it is also a breakfast/snack option. Even during evening tea time, avalakki is a good combination with tea/coffee.

Preparation of avalakki is simple, doesn't take much time and it is tasty as well. We can also add vegetables to make it nutritious. Especially in Maharashtra region, avalakki / poha is very famous.

Ingredients: (1 cup=250 ml) 
  • Avalakki (thick)- 2 cups.
  • Sugar - 2 to 3 teaspoons
  • Lemon - 1/2
  • Capsicum-1 (optional)
  • Potato - 1 (optional)
  • Onion-1 (optional) - for preparing agalkaas avalakki, onion is not used
  • Green chillies-2
  • Ginger (1 inch)
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Grated coconut-1/4 cup
  • Salt - according to taste

Preparation time - 15 minutes.
Serves 2-3.


Step 1. Soak avalakki (thick) for 2-5 minutes depending upon the thickness of avalakki.

Step 2. After 2-5 minutes of soaking, drain water. And add salt and sugar to it.

Step 3. Cut vegetables like capsicum, potato, onion, green chillies, ginger (1 inch). Grate coconut.

Step 4.. Heat oil, add mustard seeds, hing, cumin, curry leaves. Wait till mustard seeds sputter.

Step 5. Add green chillies, ginger and fry these. Then add other vegetables, add salt and turmeric powder and fry.

Step 6. Add grated coconut. Saute well. Then add and mix avalakki to it. Turn off the stove.  Sprinkle lemon juice (1/2 lemon).
